ISIIS Deep-Focus Particle Imagers

The ISIIS Deep-focus Particle Imager is a camera system made to image small particles (such as plankton, marine snow, oil droplets, water spray, etc) over a large depth of field.

ISIIS-DPI FAQ

The camera system is composed of two enclosures facing each other: the light source enclosure and the camera enclosure. The distance between these two housings often represents the full depth of field the camera is able to image while maintaining a good focus.

We offer three sizes of ISIIS DPI imagers which closely relate to the size of their viewport: 75mm, 125mm, and 150mm.

Depending on your applications, we can provide the imager as a stand-alone or pair it with a towed sled or ROTV.

For autonomous applications, we offer a logger, a control unit able to start pre-programmed sessions and record images.

Configurations depend on your specific application. Scientists have stacked imagers to sample a wider area or used a combination of two cameras, each focusing on different size taxa.

The imager is well suited to image any “particles” 200um and up. Depth of field will vary from 2cm for small particles up to 30-40cm for larger organisms (1mm and up). The water volume sampled can therefore quickly reach over 100L/sec when imaging medium size taxa.

ISIIS DPI Image Chart

The first ISIIS imager was developed in 2005. Since then, many missions, with different ISIIS units have been completed.

Deployments in different environments (from eutrophic murky waters to oligotrophic seas), sea-state, and from various supporting platforms, prove the instrument is highly capable and versatile.
