BX-750 Box Corer

The BX-750 box corer is a heavy-duty sediment sampling tool specifically designed for deep-sea operations. Its large stainless-steel sample box minimizes contamination risk, while adjustable weights and penetration depth controls make it ideal for a range of sediment types.

Key features include:

  • Automatic door-closing mechanism
  • Pre-trip preventer bar with posi-action hook for safe deployment
  • Quick-release spade latches
  • Jacking dolly for easy mounting and removal of the sample box and spade

Due to its size and weight, the BX-750 requires a large vessel with appropriate handling equipment for safe deployment and recovery.

Material: Stainless Steel

Weight: 980 kg

Height: 212 cm

Deck footprint: 200 cm X 250 cm

Box area: 75 cm X 75 cm X 60 cm

Box corers are used to retrieve high-integrity sediment samples from the seafloor. The corer is deployed vertically and triggered upon contact with the seabed. A spade then swings beneath the sample during retrieval to prevent material loss.

BX-750’s stainless steel doors reduce the “bow-wave effect” during descent and automatically close upon sampling, sealing the sample chamber from the water column. Once recovered, samples can be accessed through large access doors or by removing the box entirely, including its cutting blade.

Box corers are widely used for collecting:

  • Zoobenthos (Gage & Tyler 1991, Paterson et al. 1998)
  • Surficial sediments (McCave 1985, Ekeroth et al. 2012)
  • Seafloor concretions (Hessler & Jumars 1974, Veillette et al. 2007)

They also support sub-coring and replicate subsampling (Blomqvist & Boström 1987) for detailed analysis.
