The MC-400 Hedrick/Marrs Multi-Corer is specifically designed to retrieve sediment and water samples in lakes and shelf waters. The sample tubes of the MC-400 are sealed with a silicone rubber upper door gasket and neoprene or carpet lower door seal. Each of the four sample tubes can be removed from MC 400 the coring unit for immediate processing in the laboratory without exposing their contents to the surface environment. Overall sample tube length is 58 cm, with a maximum penetration of 34.5 cm.
A maximum corer height of 197 cm allows efficient operation on smaller research vessels. The deck footprint is a mere 177 cm x 177 cm. Provisions have been made to carry up to two 4-liter water bottles that actuate as the frame legs touch bottom. With the positive sealing characteristics of the Hedrick/Marrs Multi-Corer, the researcher can be assured that the water overlying the sediment is the actual in-situ water and is not the result of water exchange on the way to the surface.

Multi-corers are designed to recover undisturbed surface sediments and are therefore well-suited to study benthic processes. A multi-corer has a series of cores attached. The multi-corer is disposed of on a research vessel and is lowered into the sea by a cable. This device can be used to study local fauna variations, geochemistry, and is ideal for sediment/water interface studies.
When the multi-corer touches the seafloor, the unit’s ballast weight pushes the assembled cores into the seafloor. As a result, each of the tubes contains a unique core with sediment of the seafloor. The multi-corer uses a unique hydrostatic damping system that slows the penetration rate down to approximately 1 cm/s.
With a deployment rate of approximately 1 meter per second on the descent coupled with a retrieval rate at winch speed, the corers are ideal for rapid assessment work. The core tubes can easily be removed from the main body of the corer so new core tubes can be added.
