BX-650 Box Corer

The BX-650 box corer is ideal for deep-water sediment sampling where high integrity and minimal contamination are critical. It features a stainless-steel box to reduce sample contamination. Adjustable weights help optimize penetration, and a depth control mechanism prevents over-penetration in soft sediments.

Key features include:

  • Automatic door-closing device
  • Pre-trip preventer bar with posi-action hook
  • Quick-release spade latches
  • Jacking dolly for mounting and removing the sample box and spade

This is a large box corer and requires a vessel with sufficient handling capacity for safe deployment and recovery.

Material: Stainless Steel

Weight: 740 kg

Height: 212 cm

Deck footprint: 165 cm X 192 cm

Box area: 50 cm X 50 cm X 60 cm

Box corers are used to sample soft sediments in lakes and oceans. The corer is lowered vertically until it impacts the seabed, at which point a trip mechanism triggers the sampling process. As it is retrieved, a spade swings underneath to seal the sample and prevent loss.

The sample remains fully enclosed during recovery, helping to preserve fine sediments and pore water. Stainless steel doors, held open during the descent to minimize bow-wave effects, automatically close once sampling begins, isolating the internal environment from the water column.

Applications:

  • Collecting zoobenthos (Gage & Tyler 1991, Paterson et al. 1998)
  • Surficial sediment sampling (McCave 1985, Ekeroth et al. 2012)
  • Recovering seafloor concretions (Hessler & Jumars 1974, Veillette et al. 2007)
  • Sub-coring to reduce core shortening
  • Taking replicate subsamples (Blomqvist & Boström 1987).
