The GMX-25 GOMEX Box Corer, named for its extensive use in the Gulf of Mexico, is a compact, stainless steel sediment sampler ideal for deep-sea soft sediment collection. Available in two box sizes (Standard and XL), the GOMEX is valued for its simplicity, precision, and comparability with smaller vessels or limited deck space.
This system is composed of four integrated units:
Lead weight trays on both sides provide downward force and act as ballast, while also powering the spade closure mechanism. The corer’s efficient tripping and closing systems make it safer to operate in rough conditions, easier to deploy, and more affordable than larger alternatives like the USNEL spade corer.
A study comparing macrofaunal samples from the Norwegian and Greenland Seas (Boland, 1991) indicates that the GOMEX yields higher-quality results than many commonly used deep-sea samplers.

Box corers are widely used to collect soft sediment samples from lakebeds and ocean floors. Upon impact with the seabed, the GOMEX is triggered via a trip mechanism. A spade then swings beneath the box as it is lifted, fully enclosing the sample and minimizing disturbance.
Stainless steel doors stay open during descent to reduce bow-wave effects and close securely on retrieval to preserve the water-sediment interface. Once on deck, samples can be accessed through large openings or by removing the box with its cutting blade.
GOMEX box corers are well suited for:
They also support sub-coring for minimizing core shortening and allow replicate sampling (Blomqvist & Boström 1987).
