In a groundbreaking partnership established in 2015, Bellamare joined forces with the prestigious Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. This collaboration marked the beginning of a remarkable journey toward large-scale deployment of Lagrangian drifters, revolutionizing ocean research.  Under the leadership of Dr. Tamay Ozgokmen, the development of the first biodegradable drifters was started, and 500+ drifters were launched in the summer of 2016.

The CARTHE drifter’s performance, affordable price range, and unique biodegradable properties have made it the drifter of choice for many surveys.

The next step: a biodegradable parachute to allow for the rapid and economic deployment of the drifters from small aircraft.
